The interview

What inspired you to write this book?

Earth Angel has been a long running project. The core concept of the Angels was the first germ of an idea – people who could summon fantastical beasts. The plot and characters stemmed from that idea and gradually I’ve been building my world over the years, interweaving the different plots and characters to form a whole novel. My first inspiration was the Final Fantasy computer games (sidenote: you get points for coolness for references Final Fantasy as an inspiration. It’s one of my favorite fantasy RPG series) and my list of inspirations has been growing ever since!

Are any of the characters inspired by real people?

Yes. Gabrielle was based on one of my childhood friends (I’ll not name them.) She was very much a tomboy and always getting into trouble. One of my characters, Dogga, began to adopt characteristics of someone very close to me (who also shall not be named.) I didn’t mean for this to happen but it made his character come to life.

What are the main themes? Did you start out with those themes in mind or did they just spontaneously occur?

The main theme is Free will Vs Fate. The theme occurred while writing then when I defined it, I worked to make it stronger so my readers could pick up on it.

Name a funny and/or dramatic moment during the writing of this book. Any hilarious goof-ups or suddenly missing chapters from your files?

I nearly published it with a whole chapter missing. It was by chance that I noticed it wasn’t there!

Any plans for a sequel or other stories in this world?

Yes. I’m working on God Slayer, which is set in Eardesha with one of the minor characters. I’d like to make Earth Angel into a series of standalone books.

Thanks for having me on your blog!
